Here's a kicker, there is no way to upgrade the vmtools and hardware with a server being rebooted! They should design a way to use vmotion to upgrade those components without a windows resboot. Obviously not possible given Microsoft's O/S but I must as how do companies that must have there systems up deal with this? Like VISA or mastercard?
I guess MS Clustering the product and doing one host a time would be the answer

That's a good point and, you're right, I should've mentioned the
requirements to upgrade in the post. The official VMware HCL should always
be checked to verify a server is supported before doing an upgrade or a
fresh install. You can find the HCL here
http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/s.... I just checked
the HCL and a search for supported systems for ESX4 returned 772 results, as
opposed to over 1400 results when searching for all ESX3.5 supported
systems. Thanks for keeping me honest Shane :)

Now don't forget to tell everyone that you must have 64bit compat CPU's to do this upgrade. Believe it or not we have clients using VI3 that wont be able to make the upgrade without a significant server revamp..

"Sounds great, but how much is it going to cost me? Nothing. Your software maintenance covers like-for-like upgrades. So, if you have VI3 Enterprise, then you can upgrade to vSphere 4 Enterprise at no additional cost." Unfortunately this is not absolutely true. vSphere 4 Enterprise is indeed a direct upgrade from VI3 Enterprise, but only until 15th December 2009 when vSphere 4 Enterprise is replaced by vSphere 4 Enterprise Plus. The catch? IT costs $295 per processor socket to upgrade to vSphere 4 Enterprise Plus. So after 15th December 2009, to continue to use DRS and Storage VMotion, customers must upgrade to vSphere 4 Enterprise Plus.

Nah :)
