According to VMware, this product was purposefully created "immature" and for small scale environments as to not impose on the third party backup vendors. This product was created basically as a proof of concept so other vendors would take it upon themselves to leverage the new backup capabilities within vSphere and to migrate them away from the old vcb based backup technologies that many still utilize.

I like to try and save my employer money when possible. Sounds pretty good right? You get a backup application (with de-dup!) that could possibly displace your primary method of backups built specifically for VMware.

Data Recovery Service

"I discovered a work around by pointing the VC client to the ESX server that is managing the vDR appliance."

i did this too, then later discovered that when you do this, your automated backups wont run. what good is backup when you take automation out of it...

In my experience, this product (even the 1.1 November 09 release) is still immature. I used it for about a month before getting 77 corrupt restore points. I can't tell you how many recatalogs and integrity checks were ran. Finally I narrowed it down to 4 corrupt restore points that couldn't be deleted. I won't bore you with the rest of the story, but vmware support had no solution. I am back to using vRanger unfortunately.

Good Post.

The other edition that doesn't include vDR is Essentials, though Essentials Plus does include vDR.

For vSphere Standard, you can purchase vDR a la carte, though it is more expensive than better 3rd party solutions.

Veeam Backup meets all your wish list items, and has file level recovery for Linux as well. Though not free, it is for the enterprise ( and SMB ).
